The University of Edinburgh is located in the heart of Scotland’s capital city, a place regularly recognised as one of the world’s most attractive cities to live, study and visit. Edinburgh combines the energy and opportunities of a major city with easy access to nature, from parks and green spaces to the surrounding countryside. Despite its compact size and population of around 500,000, Edinburgh offers a rich social and cultural experience, with world-famous festivals, historic neighbourhoods and a vibrant student community. As one of the UK’s leading tourist destinations, the city provides students with countless opportunities to explore its Old and New Towns, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Edinburgh is generally considered to be a very safe student city, with a low crime rate. The University of Edinburgh regularly receives very high satisfaction ratings for safety and security in the International Student Barometer survey. Regardless, we are not complacent about safety and security and provide a variety of guidance and advice to our new visiting students.

We encourage our students to get involved with as many clubs and societies as possible whilst in Edinburgh, and there are over 290 to choose from: from Harry Potter to astrobiology, from chocolate to the Tango, there is a society out there for everyone!
