Why study at UTokyo—Tradition and Innovation

Founded in 1877, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is the oldest national university in Japan. Over the course of its long and distinguished history, the university has produced some of the most outstanding scholars, scientists, and social and political leaders of Japan and the world, including 10 Nobel laureates, 15 prime ministers of Japan, and one Fields Medal winner. As Japan’s most comprehensive research university, UTokyo has 10 undergraduate faculties/college, 15 graduate schools, 11 affiliated Institutes, and a number of University-wide Centers. More than 5,800 faculty members teach approximately 14,000 undergraduate students and almost equal number of graduate students at three main campuses in the Tokyo region and additional research facilities across Japan. UTokyo is committed to excellence in research and education as well as establishing a truly global campus to produce the next generation of leaders of the world.


About USTEP

UTokyo accepts exchange students from partner universities with a Memorandum of Understanding concerning student exchange. Exchange students can choose between the Type U and Type G programs. The Type U program is designed for undergraduate students to take courses given in English and/or Japanese at the undergraduate College and Faculties. The Type G program is designed for graduate students who will belong to one of the Graduate Schools and study or research under the guidance of faculty members there.
